Biography
Childhood
"I was a very small boy when I recieved the bite. My parents tried everything, but in those days there was no cure."
Remus, a half-blood, was born circa 1960 on March 10th. He was a young child when he received the bite from a well-known Werewolf named Fenrir Greyback who is known to position himself on full moons in order to be in a close range of children. Remus' father had offended Fenrir which is why Remus was chosen to be attacked.
School Days
"...I was happier than I had ever been in my life. For the first time ever, I had friends, three great friends. Sirius Black... Peter Pettigrew... and, of course, your father, Harry - James Potter."
These are probably the most well known years of Remus's life. It was Dumbeldore who made school attendance possible as he put safety measures into place which would enable Remus to transform without harming other students. This included the creation of the Shrieking Shack and a way to get there (a secret passageway under the Whomping Willow).
Other than his monthly transformations, Remus' school days at Hogwarts were the happiest of his life and he finally had friends. Initially he tried to hide his affliction from them, but eventually they figured it out for themselves and, proving themselves true friends, did not shun him but rather turned his transformations into the "best times of his life". They taught themselves to become Animagi and joined Remus in the Shrieking Shack every full moon (a werewolf only harms humans; not other animals). Because of their newfound ablities to transform, they gave each other nicknames based on the animals they transformed into. Remus became "Moony" (a werewolf), Sirius became "Padfoot" (a dog), James became "Prongs" (a stag), and Peter became "Wormtail" (a rat). Using these nicknames they formed "the Marauders". They were dedicated to spreading mischief throughout Hogwarts and even made such inventions as the Marauders Map (a map showing all the secret passageways around Hogwarts).
In addition to his friends, Remus was also a school prefect who was in Gryffindor. We know he was intelligent and a bit of a bookworm. He struggled with his conscience about not pulling up James and Sirius when he thought they were "out of order". But mostly he loved his time at school, so much so that he came back as a teacher later on in his adult life.
The Unknown Years
"I have been shunned all my adult life, unable to find paid work because of what I am."
When he left school, Remus joined the Order of the Phoenix (a group of Wizards dedicated to fighting against Lord Voldemort and his followers) but once the group disbanded, he lived a life in poverty due to his affliction, living a solitary life and rarely left his house.
Teaching At Hogwarts
"Your the best Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher we've ever had! Don't go!"
Remus became Hogwart's Defence Against the Dark Arts professor in Harry's 3rd year. Despite his shabby robes and monthly absence due to "illness", all the students loved him and he proved to be an excellent teacher. He never made a student feel bad about their abilities (or lack thereof) in Defence, but rather tried to build their confidence and in doing so, improve their skills. He was patient and fair, but he wasn't a pushover and took his responsibility seriously. Toward the end of the school year he is re-united with his school friend (whom he though was a murderer) Sirius Black, and he helped to explain to Harry how his parents died and why Sirius was accused of murder. Unfortunately, due to Snape telling the students about Remus's affliction, he put in his resignation and left Hogwarts once more.
The Order of the Phoenix
"It's alright, Harry. We've come to take you away."
In Harry's fifth year Lord Voldemort and his Death Eaters were re-grouping and as such, the Order of the Phoenix was re-formed. Remus and the rest of the Advance Guard take Harry away from the Dursley's. When they return to the headquarters of the Order of the Phoenix (12 Grimmauld Place; Sirius's family home) Remus, along with Sirius, explains what the Order is to Harry. Remus tends to be out most of the time (doing work for the Order), but when he is home he is usually reading or chatting with other members of the Order. Sadly, at the end of Harry's fifth year Remus suffers once more when his only remaining school friend (Sirius) dies in combat. Remus never told anyone how this has affected him (Remus is always extremely reserved with his feelings - putting others before himself time and again), but he remains part of the Advance Guard and asks Harry to "Keep in touch".
During the War
"I've been living among my fellows, my equals, Werewolves."
Within Harry's sixth year the war is fully underway between Voldemort's Death Eaters and the rest of the wizarding world. Remus attends Harry's sixteenth birthday party the Burrow. On this first meeting, Harry notices that he was looking gaunt and grim. Additionally, despite expectations, he doesn't write to Harry at all during the school term, however it isn't until Christmas time (again celebrated at the Burrow) the reason for this is found out. He was lost in thought during Christmas but Harry did manage to have one conversation with him. Remus has been unable to write to Harry because he was acting as a spy for the Order of the Phoenix and living "underground" with other Werewolves. Remus explains to Harry that Fenrir Greyback is one of the Werewolves he is having to live amongst. Not only is Fenrir one of the most vicious and bloodthirsty Werewolves living underground, but he is also the one who gave Remus his bite when he was only a small child.
After Christmas Remus once again stayed out of touch with everyone until a battle breaks out at Hogwarts and the Order is called in to defend the school against the Death Eaters. Unfortunately, during the battle, Professor Dumbledore is killed and Bill Weasley is attacked by Fenrir. All of this takes its toll on Remus, who finds it hard to cope with the loss of Dumbledore; the wizard who first gave him the opportunity to come to Hogwarts despite his affliction. However, perhaps the most surprising event comes during the time when Bill's wounds are being treated in the hospital wing of the school immediately after the battle. Fleur, Bill's fiancée, defiantly states that she still loves Bill and will marry him despite the possibility that Bill will have some Werewolf characteristics. At this, Tonks who has previously remained silent and seemingly very depressed, grabs Remus by his cloak and exclaims that she too loves him despite the fact that he is a Werewolf. Remus replies that the relationship is not possible because he is "too old... too poor... too dangerous" but Tonks (with the support of Molly Weasley) is insistent. Harry next sees Remus at Dumbledore's funeral holding hands with a happier looking Tonks.
